Why did you guys stop calling? December 2, 2009

Few months back I was constantly being bugged by sales guys from different bank offering me credit cards, loans and other products they had to offer. Since I work in nights shifts, a call for such a person used to be a real bummer but I still always held myself and used to put down the offer they want me to think I actually need to avail in the utmost pleasant way I could do. Since a while now I’m not being disturbed from sleep, no one calls me when I’m on road or tries to contact me at any other time for such purpose – thanks to credit crunch I guess? Even I tried reaching couple of banks to get for myself a credit card but had no luck. No one calls back even after you request them. Seems like banks are utilizing all their energies in recovering the money from creditors. Their sales people being put on calls to make harsh calls for the return of the money to bank. Sending their recovery teams (gundas) to people who are now unable to pay back the money they lend from the bank. All this is happening because people borrowed too much money from banks and are unable to return it back? Are only creditors at fault? I guess not, even the banks and their sales guys who just for the sake of the reaching the target make a fool out of people and give them credit cards. I understand it is not banks’ headache to think about if a person needs a credit card or not, what one does with it but atleast should see how the money is going to come back. But no…”sir, you actually needs it. even if you don’t just make one or take loan on my recommendation and keep it aside. It will come to use at sometime in future” Oh ya! I knowing that I have an option to spend, I would retain myself from spending on my wishlist? I don’t think so. Majority of the stock does like that. Result? They end up paying heavy service charges on the small minimum payments they make. And this goes on for years.
Com’on boys! come sell me something. No? Lol!
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Experience February 3, 2009

Since I had enough with Warid’s customer support I finally planned to port my number to some other network. After researching call rates and services (esp if the network has EDGE or not) by all other I finally shortlisted Ufone as my next network. Though I knew that I will still not get Mobilink like customer support but still Ufone suited me.
The whole procedure for porting my number was easy (the service center being very close to my place) and cost me Rs. 55/- (Rs. 50 for Ufone port in charges and Rs 5 for photocopies of my SIM card and CNIC). Due to holidays, it took around 8 days for my number to be transfered to the Ufone network and I threw away my 64k(useless) Warid SIM.
Since I’m on Ufone, I had not faced any issues which might convince me to opt out from this as well after 60 days. The only issue is that I receive text messages multiple times from Warid subscribers. But I can live with it.
Ufone … it’s all about U
WorldCall EVDO didn’t work for me December 17, 2008

Wasted my money on EVDO from WorldCall aaakkhhh!!. Though I returned the device in 10 days but still they are going to deduct 1000Rs. as membership charges. The signals were good at my place and reviews from different people convinced me to buy the device but the internet service was poor. I would have compromised a bit if they would have provided me with good technical support. As per one of their customer service representative their response time was from 12 hrs to 24 hrs. But I think this figure is not correct since no one got back to me even after 24hrs. I did receive a call though to look into my issue when I had already asked the sales person for the return procedure.
One more thing, while purchasing the device I was convinced that I will get my money back in 2 to 3 days but later when I returned the device, I was told to follow up after 15 days for the cheque.

I used to be a loyal customer of Warid but since few months I am disappointed by the way provide the services. First I had few issues when my postpaid bills were not settled on time. The longest duration of blockage for my outgoing calls and data lasted more than 9 hours. That was the last issue I faced with postpaid zahi and switched to their prepaid.
Once again did a stupid mistake and bought the data sim from them. Within a month it was blocked twice. First for the incorrect data entry of by their sales staff and secondly when their guy tried to deliver my bill and couldn’t find my place and simply had my access blocked. The next day I went to their service center and returned their sim. They were to call me to return my deposit in the form of a cheque and it has been more then 45 days now and haven’t heard anything from them. Now I will have to visit them know the status and get the cheque.
After all the inconvenience warid has put me through I am finally planning to port my number. It’s a little difficult to take the step as all my family and friends are on this network. But I’m still willing to switch no matter I have to buy a new phone for incoming calls only.

I tried all available services for GPRS March 18, 2008

Starting with Telenor’s GPRS which they offered for no activation charges and then later on offered EDGE as well but they weren’t able to provide much constant availability and quality. The connection drops again and again or server time outs are too much. So I will say they are pretty useless when it comes to GPRS.
Ufone, huh! they can’t even give a good voice quality and service availability let alone GPRS.
Mobilink, their GPRS service is good. When i used it, I didn’t faced any unnecessary disconnects or timeouts.
Warid, the service provider I am loyal to since the day they entered Pakistan’s telecom market are the best in the service. GPRS, all time available with no issues , no timeouts (congestions and lower coverage area are exceptions). Also for my Zahi package was very economical, Rs. 500 + Tax for unlimited GPRS access. So it comes out around 21/day and I take full advantage of this service being unlimited :p . Emails, IMs, Voice Chat and my PC gets connected to the internet with it as well :p The VC is with a bit lag….but for such a low cost its awesome.

I don’t know how it happened and why it happened if there was no space for a new connection. Anyway the line man came to my home and pulled a wire to my home which had clear dial tone (this as per him was done just to see if there I a faultless connection till my home) but was not an operating tone neither was it mine. He said that he is installing the phone and in a day or two I will be alloted a new subscriber’s number and the phone will be operational. Its been 4 days now and no sign of the tone.
Once again waiting ….
PTCL, I’m confused… March 13, 2008

Last time I was told that there is no possibility of a new phone connection in near future and now just in after a week, yesterday the lineman (i think) showed up at home confirming if I requested the phone or not. Not sure why and what is happening but he assured me I will get a new connection with no issue. He told me that he will be coming today but I didn’t hear from anyone from the exchange. Once again some hope but not much so I am still waiting for the phone to get SUCCESSFULLY installed with NO ISSUES.
Now how should I grade them? I’m confused so I am leaving this thought and minding my business to get the service first.
I hate PTCL… March 10, 2008

I added a sub nick to my msn messenger, I hate PTCL and each time I was online there came a message asking why actually I hate PTCL and what they did to me. What happened is that its been months (almost an year now) I had been a victim of PTCL’s neglect. First thanks to the KWSB guys that while fixing their main line they uprooted the part of telephone cable. After around 3 or 4 months that was fixed. So I thought we could now be getting our phone line working again.. but this wasn’t the case. The things continued and I remember I got that fixed after complaining so much about that. The line got fixed.. I could hear the dial tone but it wasn’t alone.. it came up with a massive distortion. I wasn’t able to connect to the internet due that and the line man couldn’t do anything as it was an ISDN/BRI line. He said that I should get in touch with the Clifton Exchange and the BRI guys should look into this. Anyways after few days the line was dead again and this time I lost the hope in them.
I went to the market to buy myself a CDMA phone (GO was I looking for) and instead bought myself a PTCL as I wasn’t able to find myself a desktop set of GO CDMA. I heard that net is pretty good on that and the call charges are also reasonable. But there was one thing that was attached to it.. and that was its name V with a PTCL.
It had pathetic voice quality worse and internet, forget it. I had to wait hours to send a normal email. The signals were too bad and I had to buy an external antenna to get a good reception. That helped the voice but data transfer was bad as ever. After few months I finally quit using/recharging VPTCL.
Now I wanted to subscribe myself to a DSL connection for home but for that I needed a normal telephone line. So I went to my area’s exchange and ordered a new phone connection. I was told that I can get the status in a day or two and the phone will be installed in a week if the network is present. By network they meant if there is space in the distribution box.
After two days I went their and got the status “No Progress” for my phone request. I went to meet the DE of my area and was told that there is no possibility for a new phone connection. He told me that they are still in the process of repairs (just imagine its been almost an year and still they are repairing… I don’t know what the hell is taking them so long to repair) and before that they are finished they cannot give me a new connection as there is no NETWORK. I enquired if they had any ETA for that. (though I was pissed off ..but laughed inside) ETA??? from PTCL … that was one of the stupidest thing I did. Anyways they had no ETA. Furthermore the guy with whom I placed my order for a new connection suggested me to get in touch with the lineman and he will be able to make available some new line for you.
Angry and with my dreams of using a broadband shattered, I walked out. I think no matter what they do, what they offer, they will still be hated by me. But I have … in fact no one has any other option then PTCL.
I hate you PTCL I hate you. :@

The link below had the fonts as well as the layout for keyboard. I have a good hand on Phonetic and same was available here..yay!!
http://www.crulp.org/software/localization.htm
Downloaded the zipped fonts as well as the keyboard layout and started with copying the fonts to the fonts directory.
sudo nautilus fonts:
After this the keyboard layout needed to be edit with the new one which was obtained from below link.
http://www.crulp.org/Downloads/ur.zip
Using this command I opened the layout file and copied the contents of ur.txt file present in ur.zip, obtained above.
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pk
After saving the changes adding Pakistan keyboard layout at System > Preferences > Layout did the trick. To place a shortcut with which I can easily switch between the layouts, I added Keyboard Indicator to the panel.
